Ethical positioning statement for the Voices to Visibility Project:
Historically, research has often exploited the lived experiences of marginalized communities, with participants contributing their time, knowledge, and personal stories without receiving meaningful benefits in return. In many cases, findings are never shared with the communities involved, or when they were, the results were presented in ways that were inaccessible or offered little practical value. This has contributed to mistrust of research and reinforced inequitable relationships between researchers and the communities they research. As a result, there is increasing recognition of the importance of conducting research in ways that are collaborative, transparent, and reciprocal. Our team is committed to upholding the ethical responsibility to engage communities throughout the research process and to ensure that findings are returned in accessible, relevant, and actionable ways that can inform practice, policy, and community priorities.
